It’s time for another post about Barefoot Fur-Babies!

So far, we’ve got a bit of info about dogs. Now, it’s time for a little something about cats!

One of my friends recently took in a cat from an animal shelter, and it’s so gorgeous that I’ve been thinking about adopting another fur baby too – a feline one, this time.

Cats need a bit more care when it comes to accommodating them.

So point number one on integrating a cat into the household is:

Give them space!

My kids are all too keen to cuddle anything fluffy within an instant, but you need to make sure a new, potentially frightened kitty, doesn’t get overwhelmed.

I read about how grumpy cats can be about their personal space here. Though it is great when a cat comes to you for a cuddle, it should be on their terms. Yes, they’re pompous and probably just looking for a comfy lap but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be loved.

I’m also a little wary about introducing a potential cat to the dogs, which brings me to my next point:

Be careful when introducing cats to dogs

Despite what a lot of people say, canine and feline are incredibly different. How often do you see a cat in a park chasing a stick or ball? Never; you’ll usually find the cat draped across your bed.

If a cat doesn’t want to play, don’t try to get it to be friends with your dogs. They will come to endure each other after a while. And if they don’t, it’s probably best to find another home for Mr or Miss Kitty.

Don’t make them share!

Cats need their own things. I have seen kitties turn their nose up at bowls they’ve seen the dog eat out of before. They’re not daft. I’ve been getting lots of my pet stuff from equestrianclearance.com, but there are so many places to get hold of beds and bowls for your new family addition.

I’d also recommend looking on Amazon for a few books on pet socialising.
