Identity Direct: My Adventures Personalized Book Review & Giveaway 7/17

July 2, 2009 by Krissy

I usually wait a week or so before I post my review, but this one got me so excited I just had to post it the day I received it!! What is it you ask? A delightful personalized book for my 3 year old son from Identity Direct. First a little about the company Identity Direct:

Identity Direct is one of the world’s largest personalized children’s products website. Our customers place more than 600,000 orders every year. We provide a unique range of over 500 personalized gifts for children and the family and have been in business for more than 15 years. At Identity Direct we offer the hugely successful My Adventure Book series where children are featured in their own personalized adventure stories. Over 400,000 personalized books are sold every year with My Special Christmas Adventure, Disney Princess and Disney Cars being the most popular.

Every year we add hundreds of new personalized gifts to our range which now include personalized clocks, poems, placemats, lunch boxes and towels, to name a few. We have created a selection of personalized children’s gifts featuring Disney characters such as Cars, Disney Princess, Nemo, Winnie the Pooh, Fairies, Toy Story and more. In addition our new characters include Dora the Explorer, SpongeBob SquarePants, Sesame Street, Spider-Man and Hulk.

Now let me tell you, my 3 year old is addicted to Disney Pixar Cars. I am talking we have to go visit the cars EVERY time we go shopping. I am the mean mommy who does not buy him the cars (don’t worry the grandparents have that covered), limits the time he gets to watch the movie (20 min at a time), and will not buy all the candy that has the Cars logo on it. Now books on the other hand, sign me up. When I saw that Identity Direct offered a personalized Disney Pixar Car Book, I just had to email them!

My Adventure Books are personalized books which incorporate your child’s name – making them the star of an exciting adventure story. In each of these wonderful stories, your child’s name, birthday, address, friends or brothers and sisters names are all printed in these unique, personalized children’s books.

This book arrived just before lunchtime and silly me didn’t know what was in the package until I opened it. BIG mistake, because of course the 3 yr old saw it. I have to admit lunchtime went much better than usual, only because I told him he had to eat every last bite and then we could read it as one of the books before nap. Hey you take what you can get, right?

I can’t get over the detail of this book. This book has 30 pages of wonderful illustrations! Not only is the 3 yr old’s name mentioned repeatedly but I also got to choose 3 other names so when I read the book the 15 month’s name is mentioned too so he toddles over! I also love how the story is the true story of Lightning McQueen. Many of the other books that we have purchased do not stay true to the original story or omits certain details and let me tell you my son knows his Lightning McQueen story!! This story actually gives a little extra in that it tells how McQueen felt in certain situations!

Identity Books has generously offered 1 lucky Barefoot Mommies Reader an My Adventure Book of their own. Don’t worry if you only have girls…you will have your choice of Disney Pixar Cars or Disney Princesses!!

I Can Do That! Curious George Discovery Beach Game Review

    June 26, 2009 by Krissy

Both of my boys absolutely adore Curious George so when I found a company that makes Curious George games, I knew I just had to contact them! I Can Do That! Games is a great toy company that features games from Curious George and Dr. Suess. Here is a little about the company:

I Can Do That! Games™ foster self-confidence by giving kids a chance to discover what they can do. Favorite Dr. Seuss and Curious George characters come to life—challenging kids to run, slide, hide, seek, sort, explore—and more! By engaging kids physically, socially, and creatively, I Can Do That! Games™ provide endless hours of fun for the whole family.
    Their philosophy:
Play is essential to the development of a happy, healthy child. Playing games with others provides especially powerful opportunities to grow socially. Taking turns, teaming up, helping each other, winning, and sometimes losing, are important life lessons we practice as we play games.
I Can Do That! Games™ are designed to inspire confidence and positive social interactions for children and their families. Through research, innovation, and the help of thousands of play-tester families, we strive to make games that enrich people’s lives.

I was fortunate enough to receive the Curious George Discovery Beach Game and let me tell you it is a HUGE hit in the family. Basically the Beach Game (as I call it) is a fun treasure seeking, I spy adventure. It comes with, and you parents are going to love this, a self-enclosed beach. That is right NO mess to clean up- treasures and sand stay sealed inside. Flip a card to reveal your challenge. Spin the spinner to find where you search. Then look for sea creatures and colorful treasures (21 in all) hidden below five secret beach locations. Can you find a match? But watch out for waves! If the game spinner lands on a wave, shake the box and the treasures will slide and hide in new locations. Find the most treasures to win!
I love that it promotes several things: matching and memory skills, deductive reasoning, and inspires exploration and discovery. We have played it several times this week and I love the priceless expression on his face when he locates the treasures. He is also learning to wait his turn patiently and to pay attention to what the spinner points to. I love this game! The Curious George Discovery Beach Game is for children ages 3-8 and can be purchased Target, target.com, and specialty retail outlets.

    Ladybug Game Review & Giveaway

    June 26, 2009 by Krissy
Filed under Giveaways, Reviews and Giveaways

I came across this next game while browsing the Internet. I read the story behind it and knew it deserved to be showcased. What is it? The Ladybug Game which is made by a company called Zobmondo!! Entertainment. As always, a little bit about the company:

Zobmondo!! Entertainment, makers of the “Would You Rather…?” line of games, has launched its first game for children: “The Ladybug Game,” created by six-year-old Kylie Copenhagen, who fell in love with ladybugs during a school science project. “In Mrs. Ditto’s first grade class, I learned that ladybugs are the coolest bugs around,” said Kylie. “Since my friends liked them too, I invented a game about them.”

The Ladybug game comes with a gameboard, Ladybug pawns and stands, Aphid chips, Ladybug cards (Moving cards, Aphid cards), and Praying Mantis passes. The object of the game is to help the ladybugs find their way back home (a rosebush) after a windstorm launches them airborne and they land on a faraway dirt pile. The first ladybug to find her way “home” is the winner. Along the way, the ladybugs encounter various hazards such as tall grass, praying mantis’, aphids and ants. The Ladybug Game is designed for interactive play between parents and children ages three to seven.

I love the educational aspect of this game. My 3 year old was able to catch on right away. Although he can’t read yet, he picked up on the numbers, diligently counting along the way. I like that there are certain barriers you must pass before continuing on which was a good lesson in patience. He also learned a little about the bugs which was a bonus! The story of the ladybug adventure also comes with this adorable game and is a MUST read before you begin to play as it cuts out alot of the “but why mommy” questions!

The Ladybug Game is generously offering 5 lucky BarefootMommies readers the Ladybug game for their very own!

    Win It!

Mandatory Entry: Please visit the Ladybug game website and tell me 2 names of the ladybugs

Sleeping Bear Press: ‘Say Daddy’ Book Review & Giveaway

      June 25, 2009 by Krissy
Filed under Giveaways, Reviews and Giveaways

Do your children love books? I have to say I look forward to reading books as much as my 3 yr old does. I love the stories, the words, and in many books the illustrations. Such is the case with the book I am reviewing today. I was fotunate enough to be able to review Say Daddy from Sleeping Bear Press and let me tell you it is a keeper. A little about the book/author from Sleeping Bear Press:

Mother shares a book about love while Brother shares a book about friendship. Next Aunt Grace shares a book about adventure. Everyone in this family is eager to share books and have the newest member’s affection and attention. But all kidding aside, this family knows the bond that is created when reading aloud with someone you love.
When Daddy closed the last page, he smiled at me for hours and said, ‘Say Daddy! Say Daddy!’ He hoped that would be my first word!
But wait. Did we hear correctly? ‘Book,’ I said. ‘Book!’
Educator Michael Shoulders, who has devoted his career and life to spreading the word that “reading is magic,” offers a gentle tale reinforcing the bonding power of a good book and the importance of developing lifelong reading skills. Having been involved in education in many different roles for more than years, Dr. Michael Shoulders travels extensively, visiting schools and speaking conferences across the country. He has written several books for Sleeping Press.

      My take:
My absolute favorite thing about this story is the emphasis on books. We all know books allow children to open their imagination and dream anything possible. What better gift to give a child than a book.? This book’s illustrations are soft, dreamlike, and perfect for bedtime reading. It talks about important values children need to learn while gently lulling them to sleep.

Say Daddy is a wondeful, enchanting book sure to appeal to children and adults alike. I love that Sleeping Bear Press is dedicated to producing distinctive children’s books with rich content. Books that benefit not only the children who love them but also the adults who read them aloud in schools, libraries, and to their families each night at bedtime.

Sleeping Bear Press is generously allowing 5 Barefoot Mommy readers a chance to own this sweet book!

      Win It!

      Microplane Review & Giveaway

      June 24, 2009 by Krissy
Filed under Giveaways, Reviews and Giveaways

I have to admit this next review will strike you as odd until I explain something and it will all make perfect sense. What would you say if I told you there is a company out there who specializes in kitchen tools such as graters, foot files, and woodwoking tools? A strange combination-huh? That’s what I initially thought too!

It started out in 1990, merely as a new type of woodworking tool. Microplane® tools’ tiny razor-like edges are formed by a totally different process called photo-etching in which holes are dissolved with a chemical, leaving edges that finely slice instead of tearing or shredding.
The big moment of branching out came in 1994, when Lorraine Lee, a homemaker in Ottawa, Canada, was making an Armenian orange cake. Out of frustration with her old grater, she picked up a new tool her husband, Leonard, had brought home from their hardware store, Lee Valley Tools. She slid the orange across its blades and was amazed. Lacy shards of zest fell from its surface like snowflakes. The Lees marveled at the tool, ate the cake, then promptly changed the product description in their catalogue. The Microplane® grater had earned permanent space in the kitchen.
10 years later, Microplane® introduced its Personal Care Line. The Microplane® foot file, with its 95 tiny files working to gently massage and exfoliate dry skin, was created to soothe tired, sore feet and have them feeling silky smooth and full of energy in no time.

I was fortunate enough to be able to try the Sweet Feet Gift Set along with the Microplane Hand Held Adjustable Slicer with Food Holder.

Let’s start with the Sweet Feet Gift Set. It includes the Paddle Foot File, your choice of 4 oz. Foot Cream (Dreamsicle or Citrus Twist scented), and Choice of Spa Socks (pink or ecru). I am a HUGE citrus fan so I choose the citrus twist and pink spa socks. According to the website: The Foot File’s 95 tiny files create a bi-directional exfoliating system that gently massages tired feet, removing cracked dry skin, leaving them silky soft. Rough skin disappears while healthy new skin emerges. Use our Dreamsicle or Citrus Twist scented foot cream afterwards for making newly smooth feet feel pampered and sexy. Finally, slip on our “heavenly soft” spa socks to protect and pamper your feet. Treat yourself to a mini-pedicure in-between salon and spa visits whenever and wherever you want. Transform your soles!

What can I say…it lived up to its expectations…the bottom of my feet have never felt so smooth. It was downright decadent to apply the foot cream and then to top it off with the slippers…ahh pure bliss!! I LOVED it and the greatest thing is, it took no time at all for all of you busy ladies out there!

My second selection was the Microplane Hand Held Adjustable Slicer with Food Holder from the specialty series. I will let you in on a little secret…I can’t stand cutting tomatoes…I don’t like to eat them, I can’t cut them straight, there just not my thing. As soon as I read this description I knew it was for me:

Designed with the professional chef and home cook in mind, the new black Adjustable Slicer features a contoured shape and non-slip feet for added strength and stability when slicing, and an ergonomic soft-touch handle in charcoal grey that’s comfortable to use and ensures a safe, sure grip.
Easily adjust and better control the size of slices for precise, restaurant-quality results. Microplane®’s Adjustable Slicer’s V-shaped blade is ultra-sharp for fast, effortless slicing of all types of hard and soft foods. Available with a protective device to safeguard the hand while slicing foods of all shapes and sizes.

Before I go any further, please re-read the last line I wrote regarding the protective device to safeguard the hand. Please follow it unlike my dear hubby who just had to slice a cucumber without the protective device…what happened? You guessed it a nice little slice on the hand…I warned him and he didn’t listen so it’s his fault I say. “But the cucumber wouldn’t fit” he said. Ever think about cutting the cucumber smaller dear? but enough about that!

I really like it! It cuts my tomatoes perfectly which is the main reason I requested it..finally something that does exactly what it promotes. My only hesitation: my 2 little ones at home so if you buy it please make sure you ALWAYS keep it out of reach of children (husbands too for me)

Microplane is generously offering both products for a giveaway. That’s right 2 lucky winners!

      OR

      Win It!

Mandatory Entry: Please visit Microplane and tell me what other item not mentioned in my review captures your attention.

VTech LS6217 cordless phone review & giveaway

      June 23, 2009 by Krissy
Filed under Giveaways, Reviews and Giveaways

We recently moved to a ranch home with a furnished basement and I have been so frustrated with my cordless phones. Whenever I get to certain sections of the basement, the person who I am talking to can’t hear me. I jumped at the chance to review VTech’s new LS6217 phone. First a little about VTech:

At VTech, we live by the words “innovation beyond technology.” Our mission is to be the most cost-effective designer and manufacturer of innovative, high-quality consumer electronics products and to distribute them to markets worldwide in the most efficient manner possible.

Within the realm of telecommunication products, our North American operation is one of the top 3 players in the US cordless phone market. VTech’s spirit of innovation has allowed us to assume the roles of pioneers and prime movers in the industry.

As we look to the future, and the evolution of telecommunications, be assured that VTech will continue to lead the way. Exciting new technologies are emerging, and VTech is driving integrated solutions in all areas of our core businesses to provide consumers with innovative, high quality, reliable, leading edge products.

      cordless

      caller ID/call waiting

      slim handset size

DECT 6.0 Digital technology provides the best sound quality, security and range in cordless phones

      Interference free

My absolute favorite thing about this phone (other than I can talk ANYWHERE in the house) is the numerous ways you can customize it. It comes with your choice of 3 different colors for the outside border of the phone as well as the phone base itself. Seeing that I have 3 males in my life my obvious choice for color was blue. Not only do you choose those colors but you are able to decide what design you want for the back of the phone. 9 different designs are included with the phone….but wait….VTech has also made on online toole which you can create your own personalized image, How cool is that? Want a picture of your kids, that perfect sunset, your hubby? The possibilities are endless. I of course choose a pic of the kids and then had to remove it because the 15 month old wouldn’t put it down :)

The instruction for programming the phone are simple and within 5 minutes I had the entire phone up and running (after charging it overnight). I almost forgot to mention a very important feature…how many of you constantly lose your cordless phone? I can’t tell you how many times a day I either misplace my phone or the 15 month old takes off with it to parts unknown! The LS6217 has a nifty little button on the base that you press to find the handset. The little lost phone beeps until it is found…love it!! You are also able to glance over and see if you have a voice mail message by a blinking light also found on the base. Worried about identity theft..this phone has you covered with digital security. They really thought of everything.

The LS6217 retails for $34.95 and can be found at: www.vtechphones.com, Best Buy and Walmart stores nationwide.

VTech has generously offered 1 Barefoot Mommy reader her very own LS6217 cordless phone!

      PK Originals Review & Giveaway

      June 22, 2009 by Krissy
Filed under Giveaways, Reviews and Giveaways

I have found a darling shop on Etsy this time for you. It is PK Originals and let me tell you…I love what the shop has to offer. First a little about Pam the artist:

I’m just a little shop…I sew in my home. I have a 9×12 room I laughingly call my studio. I LOVE fabric. All kinds of fabric, sometimes the fabric will scream to be added to a quilt and sometimes a piece will gently nudge me to design something special for it. I enjoy the design process. When I am not working on projects for my family I enjoy crocheting, cross-stitch, needle point, embroidery, and of course sewing. I enjoy being creative and crafts are the easiest way to do it!

So I took a look around PK Originals and immediately was taken by the Elephant BooBoo Buddie. A what you ask? A BooBoo Buddie is an ice cube holder made of black fleece and has a terrycloth pocket on the inside to hold the ice securely. The happy face on the outside reminds the child that their buddy will make it “all better” real soon. Pam’s daughter asked why black fleece? The answer is simple….not every boo boo needs (or can be) washed before the crying is stopped.

Unlike some of the filled boo boo bags, this little guy doesn’t need to be kept in the freezer, since you just add ice cubes as needed. When it is dirty, just toss it in the washer with your other darks in cold water and hang dry.
      My take:
I can’t begin to describe how charming my elephant BooBoo Buddie is. The detailing is exquisite and is sure to bring a smile to a child’s face. As I knew would happen, we needed our buddie the very first night. My 3 yr old actually held his BooBoo Buddie for 5 minutes on his arm which is no small feat in itself.
The BooBoo Buddie measures approximately 4 1/2″ square and comes with a velcro tab to keep the ice securely in its pouch. Price is $7.75 per buddie or $14 for two. With summer comes the requisite scrapes and bumps so having one for your glove compartment is a great idea…don’t have any ice nearby? Just pull the terrycloth outside the pocket and soak in cold water so you will be good to go.
Have an older child who doesn’t want an animal BooBoo Buddie? PK Originals has you covered. Pam is also showcasing a soccer ball and a buddie for dance at her shop. She has plans for designs of a police car, rocket ship, dinosaur, cowgirl boots, and a cowboy hat.
PK Originals is generously offering 3 lucky Barefoot Mommy readers one of their very own BooBoo Buddies…winner’s choice of design!

      Win It!

Mandatory Entry: Please visit PK Originals and tell me another BooBoo Buddie design that you like.

Mimi the Sardine Lunch Bug Review

      June 21, 2009 by Krissy

We have been spending alot more time outdoors now that the weather is finally nice. My 3 yr old always asks if we can have a picnic lunch and I always find myself cringing at the mess it makes. Let me explain…ever since he saw the school-aged kids carry lunch bags he wants one…except he rips the paper bags and many other bags are simply to flimsy or don’t clean well.
I have been searching for just the right lunch bag and I think I finally found it in Mimi the Sardine’s Lunch Bugs (did you catch lunch bUgs not bags…cute huh). First let me tell you a little about Mimi the Sardine:

Mimi the Sardine is a small family-owned company located just north of San Francisco. We have been in business since 1988.We strive to serve our customers well by putting earth-friendly, well-made and meaningful products on the market.
Our world-class Swedish designs emphasize fun, while the quality, durability, and easy care of our fabric make you and our planet happy! Our cotton has a water-based acrylic coating (not PVC). It is permanently water, soil, and mess resistant yet remains soft and supple. Simply wipe clean or machine wash warm. Hang dry or tumble dry low.

Right away my ears perked up when I read mess resistant. My kind of bag! Lunch bugs are friendly, fun, and practical, easy to clean: just wipe, or machine-wash and tumble dry on low! Equipped with a sturdy zipper and soft handles, children and adults alike fall in love with the fun and colorful patterns, and everyone appreciates its eco-friendly and safe fabric.

I was able to pick the pattern of my lunch bug so I gave the choice to the 3 yr old. Of course he went for the propeller one…which is full of airplanes and “look mommy helicopters”. We had to have a picnic supper the very same day we received out lunch bug since his eyes lit up and how do you tell an excited 3 yr old no.

You know what…it was mess resistant. Several drops of jelly got inside the fabric and wiped right off. I just just got done washing antd taking it out of the dryer and it is good as new. We have definitely found our go to lunch bag!

Lunch bugs are priced at $23.95 and come in a variety of patterns I am sure you will love! Mimi the Sardine also specializes in bib, splashmats for under chairs, and adorable aprons. Be sure to check out Mimi the Sardine!

Pick Me Up Boutique Review & Giveaway

      June 19, 2009 by Krissy
Filed under Giveaways, Reviews and Giveaways

I am back with another talented artist from Etsy. Please meet Heidi from Pick-Me-Up Boutique. This store offers unique hand-made wire wrapped jewelry. In Heidi’s own words:
I have always been interested in craft projects-growing up I looked forward to art class each week and joined any art club that was offered. My interest in jewelry started a long time ago, making friendship bracelets and beaded necklaces to give away as gifts. As I got older and craftier, I became interested in wire jewelry and thought it might be something I would enjoy making. I bought some craft wire and the basic tools to begin learning and practicing all the twists as turns of creating wire jewelry. I finally worked up the courage to try it in 14k gold and sterling silver wire and that was when Pick-Me-Up Boutique was born!
I create unique lightweight jewelry that is meticulously wire-wrapped to boast a variety of gemstones, crystals, and beads. Each piece is made to order and given full attention in hopes that given each woman who wears them a little “pick-me-up”! Along with my everyday earrings, I have recently introduced a line of Special Event jewelry that can be easily customized for weddings, proms, or a special evening out.
