Butterball Turkey Giveaway!

Well, November blew right past me and I thought I had longer to go before Thanksgiving! Sadly, it’s next week and I am not ready at all!

The nice folks at Butterball are here to help 3 lucky readers be a little better prepared for next week’s big feast!

I spent some time on the phone a while back with Mary Clingman, director of the Turkey Talk-Line. For anyone who has not heard of this, it is AMAZING! You can call them at 1-800-BUTTERBALL and ask them any of your turkey related questions. I asked Mary a few myself while on the phone with her and am happy to pass on her (paraphrased) answers here.

First, Mary suggested that you make a to-do list. And, given the fact that Thanksgiving is next week, I would think you should make this now if you haven’t already. Think through the whole meal and plan backwards. Do things now like make sure you have a roasting pan (on my shopping list for the weekend) and test out your knives to be sure you have something sharp enough to carve your bird.

Second, if you’re having people to your house, encourage them to bring something. Don’t feel like you have to take the whole thing on.

Third, be sure to buy enough turkey. If you don’t know how much is enough, check out the turkey calculator on the Butterball site. You enter how many adults and kids will be there and whether you like leftovers or not and the calculator helps you decide what to buy. The answer for our dinner was 20 pounds.

Fourth, be sure to allow enough time for thawing. Allow 1 day for every 4 pounds. This means my bird needs to start defrosting on Saturday. If you need to speed things up, immerse the bird in the wrapper in cold water. This will speed things up to 30 minutes per pound.

Finally, some tips for cooking the turkey itself. Remove the turkey from the wrapper. Pat dry. Remove the neck and giblets. Bake! It’s that easy! Mary gave some helpful tips. She said once the turkey is in, there’s no need to baste it. “The skin is like a raincoat,” she told me, “it just runs the juices off.” This makes the drippings even better.

Once your turkey is done, put it on a platter, cover it with foil, and cover it with a bath towel. This will keep it warm for a few hours while you finish everything else. Allow yourself 20 minutes to carve.

Mary was incredibly helpful and sweet to talk to. I know she, or one of the other people at 1-800-BUTTERBALL would be happy to help you out!

Now, if, like me, you’re hosting Thanksgiving next week, Butterball would like to help (3 of you, anyway).

To win a $15 turkey certificate, fill out the form below. I’ll be sharing your answers with Butterball.

I want to get these to people to use for Thanksgiving, so all entries are due by 11:59 pm on Thursday, November 19. I’ll mail certificates on Friday. US entrants only, please.

Note: I received no compensation or product in exchange for this giveaway.
